Built-up stainless steel lettering with Perspex fronts are also referred to as “rim and return” letters. The basic idea with this type of lettering is to create a stainless steel case into which a Perspex letter is fitted.

Built-up stainless steel lettering with Perspex fronts are ideal if you want to achieve a stainless steel letter with an illuminated face.

In this example, the stainless steel built-up lettering is made from Mirror/ Chrome finish material with Orange Perspex as the face lettering.

How Perspex fronted stainless steel built up lettering is made

Built-up stainless steel lettering with Perspex fronts are made in the same way as a normal, solid faced stainless steel built-up letter; a face letter is cut from stainless steel and a solid stainless steel return is welded to it.

To get a workable Perspex front into this type of lettering we simply inline the face by a suitable distance. This distance is called the shoulder width.

The shoulder-distance needs to be large enough to allow the Perspex front letter to sit flat onto the inside of the letter, avoiding the welds which hold the stainless steel letter to the returns.
